The maximum levels of vitamin D in infant formula are included:
Per 100 kJ at least 0,48 µg/ maximum 0,6 µg
Per 100 kcal at least 2,0 µg/ maximum 2,5 µg
The erucic acid content shall not exceed 0,4 % of the total fat content.
Until now, the maximum content of vitamin D in infant formula has been 3 µg/100 kcal. However, concerns have been expressed as many infants have an additional intake of vitamin D through supplementation, which could lead to an overdose. If overdosed, vitamin D accumulates in the body and can cause serious damage to health.
As food-borne exposure to eucaric acid may pose a long-term health risk to infants and young children, the maximum levels of erucic acid in infant formula and follow-on formula have been reduced in the Delegate Regulation (EU) 2016/127.
