• Arvato Systems has been commissioned by gematik with operating its central telematics infrastructure for at least eight more years
  • This strengthens the company’s position as an IT partner for the healthcare sector

Arvato Systems has once again been awarded the contract by gematik (Gesellschaft für Telematikanwendungen der Gesundheitskarte mbH) to operate, main-tain and upgrade the central telematics infrastructure (TI) for the healthcare sector as part of a Europe-wide tender.

As a result, the Bertelsmann Group IT specialist and gematik will be extending their long-term partnership for at least eight more years. Arvato Systems was commissioned in 2013 with setting up and operating the central TI for the trial run of the eHealth card, which included successfully setting up and implementing all required components.

The object of tender comprises the upgrading and operation of the telematics infrastructure, with end-to-end responsibility for data exchange across all sectors in the healthcare industry. Now, Arvato Systems will continue to assume responsibility through June 2027 for expanding and operating the central infrastructure, and will operate all the components and products that this requires in its data centers in Germany.

“We’re very excited to have received the contract and to continuing our suc-cessful partnership with gematik,” says Jan Wemmel, Head of eHealth at Arvato Systems. “We’re proud to be able to contribute our experience and expertise to further developing the digital healthcare system, which we have helped shape and configure from day one” says Jan Wemmel.

Operating the TI requires the integration and continuous upgrading of a large number of components. These include: complex public key infrastructures for providing security via digital encryption and electronic signatures, wide area networks covering all of Germany designed for secure long-distance data transmission, highly secure and reliable data center services, and software deployment/development.

Pleased with having been awarded the new contract, Matthias Moeller, CEO of the Arvato Systems Group, says: “We’ve proved yet again that we are the leading partner for the reliable implementation of the most complex IT requirements. The IT infrastructure that Arvato Systems developed according to gematik’s specifications delivers maximum security. It is the key factor in generating the benefits we all want from a future digital healthcare system. That’s our vision – and it’s what drives us.”

Telematics (a combination of telecommunications and computer science) and the IT infrastructure used to this end represent a key component of digitizing the healthcare industry, and are necessary for the Germany-wide introduction of eHealth card applications. The telematics infrastructure networks a range of information systems used in the healthcare industry and guarantees the ex-change of information across all sectors in accordance with the most recent standards laid out by gematik.
