Born in Milan on June 24th, 1910, as Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, or A.L.F.A., and gaining its current moniker after World War I under the ownership of Nicola Romeo, Alfa Romeo is uniquely linked to some of the most prestigious pages of the history of Formula One: its Alfetta 158 and 159 were the dominating forces in the first two seasons of the world championship, winning the inaugural race in the championship’s history and propelling Nino Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio to the title in 1950 and 1951.
This sporty soul is well and truly alive in today’s Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN Formula One team, competing under the logo of the Biscione on the world’s most prestigious racing scene.
To celebrate this special occasion, Alfa Romeo will open the doors of its historic museum in Arese, Italy, inviting fans and motorsport enthusiasts from all over the world to see a unique exhibition of auto making and motorsport history – both in person and online.
A special celebration programme will be broadcast on Alfa Romeo’s YouTube channel and it is only fitting that the drivers following in the hallowed footsteps of Farina and Fangio, Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN’s Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi, will make a special appearance to represent the team. The programme will start at 3:30pm CEST.
The day will also see the public debut of the new limited-edition Giulia GTA, conceived for Alfa Romeo’s 110th anniversary. The new Giulia GTA, based on the Giulia Quadrifoglio, is fitted with a more powerful version of the 2.9 V-6 bi-turbo engine with 540 hp and a special body kit designed and manufactured by Sauber Engineering. With its extensive use of ultra-light materials, it benefits from a weight reduction of 100 kg, achieving a best-in-class weight/power ratio of 2.82 kg/hp.
Frédéric Vasseur, Team Principal Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN and CEO Sauber Motorsport AG: “It is a great honour to be part of the incredible story of Alfa Romeo. This is a marque that has written indelible moments of motorsport and we are proud to be writing the latest chapter in this prestigious history, on track and, through Sauber Engineering’s work on the new Giulia GTA, on the road. On behalf of everyone at Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN, I offer the team’s congratulations for this important milestone, hoping the next 110 year can be as successful as the ones we just completed.”
The Sauber Group of Companies is composed of three operational entities: Sauber Motorsport AG, which operates and manages the Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN Formula One team; Sauber Engineering AG, which focuses on prototype development and additive manufacturing; and Sauber Aerodynamik AG, which conducts full and model-scale testing in the factory’s state-of-the-art wind tunnel and creates ground-breaking innovations in the field of aerodynamics. The companies collaborate closely and share know-how to apply the expertise of more than 500 dedicated individuals at the headquarter in Hinwil, Switzerland, to all internal and external projects. Since its founding in 1970, the passion for racing has been at the heart of Sauber.
For the last 50 years, the innovative Swiss company has been setting standards in the design, development and construction of race cars for various championship series, such as Formula One, DTM, and WEC. Following its own Formula One debut in 1993, Sauber Motorsport AG has established one of the few traditional and privately held teams in the sport. After 25 years of competition in Formula One, the company launched a long-term partnership with Alfa Romeo in 2018 and enters the 2020 championship under the new team name Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN.
