iTernity, software manufacturer for future-proof data storage, plans to permanently offset its CO2 emissions and become climate neutral. The company has calculated its carbon footprint for 2020 and will use the compensation amount to support two climate protection projects. In the long term, the aim is to create an intensive awareness of sustainable business and to further avoid emissions.

Ralf Steinemann, CEO of iTernity, explains: "We are completely offsetting our CO2 footprint from 2020 and want to repeat this step every year from now on in order to operate in a climate-neutral manner. As iTernity, we are well positioned, but have already found improvements for the future when calculating our footprint. We want and need to continue to raise this awareness."

iTernity’s total CO2 consumption in 2020 was 18,910 kg CO2. To compensate for inaccuracies and fluctuations, a 5% markup was applied, bringing the total emissions to 19,856 kg CO2. According to the EcoCockpit calculator of the Effizienz-Agentur NRW, this corresponds to a forest area of approximately three soccer fields or 1,986 trees.

From now on, iTernity wants to calculate and compensate this CO2 footprint annually. With a payment of €195 per ton of CO2, iTernity is following the recommendation of the German Federal Environment Agency and is thus well above the CO2 price recommended by compensation providers. For 2020, this results in an offset contribution of €3,871.92. With the rounded-up amount of €4,000, the software manufacturer supports one global and one regional climate protection project:

  • 3,000€ go to an Atmosfair project that will enable a 2.9 megawatt solar installation on Madagascar, replacing the burning of 1,300,000 liters of heavy oil per year.
  • €1,000 go to NatureOffice and will be used to offset the calculated CO2 emissions as well as for the DeutschlandPlus-Project, which realizes different activities like reforestation, biotope care, rewetting of upland moors, and forest care in the Black Forest.

iTernity’s work is designed for longevity, as it involves securing corporate data for decades. The software vendor’s mission is to bring business-critical data securely into the future. According to CEO Ralf Steinemann, this mission is now to be carried forward, so that an intensive understanding of sustainability is firmly anchored in the company’s business activities. "In addition to avoidance and reduction, the compensation of CO2 emissions is an important step towards more climate protection," emphasizes Ralf Steinemann.
