Extremely stable metal products are required in space travel or for the transport of hydrogen.

Researchers at two U.S. research laboratories have discovered the most resistant material on earth. The alloy of chromium, nickel and cobalt becomes more crack-resistant and stronger when cooled, even at 253 degrees below zero. In contrast, the brittleness of other metals increases with increasing cold. This is due to the special crystal structure of the alloy. The bonds between the atoms should withstand pressure as much as possible, which the chromium-cobalt-nickel alloy does very well. It remains extremely hard and does not become brittle. That’s good news, because in space, for example, the temperature is as low as 270 degrees below zero, which poses great challenges for the materials. Liquid hydrogen, which will become more important in the course of climate change, also has to be cooled down considerably during transport.

Nickel and cobalt are two raw materials whose demand is high worldwide, and rising, because they are needed for lithium-ion batteries. Nickel often comes from Indonesia, an important supplier. Surpluses of nickel are low, with inventories down 49 percent since the beginning of the year. Even though supply from Indonesia will expand next year, it is questionable whether supply can keep up with demand. Global nickel consumption is expected to be eight percent higher in 2022 and 9.5 percent higher in 2023.

Nickel and cobalt, for example, are held by Canada Nickel Companyhttps://www.commodity-tv.com/play/canada-nickel-developing-the-fifth-largest-nickel-deposit-in-the-world/ – in Ontario at its Crawford project.

Cobalt and gold are in the ground at Mawson Gold’shttps://www.commodity-tv.com/play/mawson-gold-pea-shows-economic-gold-cobalt-project-in-finland/ – Rajapalot project. This is located in Finland.
