The cosmetics industry is becoming more and more international, and the USA has played a prominent role in the sector for decades. This is mainly due to the fact that the beauty ideals that set the tone for the entire cosmetics industry originated in the USA and the globally dominant American music and film industries spread beauty and lifestyle trends throughout the world. At the same time, companies in the USA have leading expertise in the development and production of new, innovative cosmetic raw materials.
In particular, the trend towards natural, organic and ethically sound products, which has also been observed in Germany and Europe in recent years, is shaping the US market as well, and thus the product ranges of established manufacturers. “We have made extensive efforts to gain access to the US market in order to make the expertise in this field available to our customers in German-speaking countries”, says Eduard Albrecht, Managing Director of PolyNeo GmbH in Frankfurt am Main. “With Protameen Chemicals we have found a partner who has many years of experience and whose broad product range perfectly complements our own.”
For more than 50 years, Protameen Chemicals from Totowa in the US state of New Jersey has been producing and distributing specialist raw materials for the personal care industry. In doing so, the company relies equally on long-term, trusting customer relationships and on the establishment and expansion of global sales networks.
Among the products with which PolyNeo will represent Protameen in future is the Signature Esters™ product line, a selection of functional ingredients with a wide range of applications for the production of established cosmetics and skin care products and the development of new ones. Protameen Signature Esters include Protachem ISP, Protachem ISL and Pro-aqua ISL. Isostearyl palmitate Protachem ISP is a non-comedogenic liquid emollient that is particularly suitable for lip care products, thanks to its colourless, tasteless and odourless properties. As a solubilising agent, Protachem ISP also facilitates the use of silicones and waxes in sunscreens. In small quantities it can also optimise the consistency of creams and lotions and is considered to be an oil-free ingredient.
As the second product in the range, the plant-based isostearyl palmitate Protachem ISL provides the skin with essential fatty acids and has a regenerative intercellular moisturising effect. Thanks to its properties, ISL is suitable for make-up, lip gloss and lipstick, mascara or rouge, for example, as well as for creams and lotions in which it can replace mineral and vegetable oils and still lend the products water-repellent properties.
Isosteareth-200 Linoleate Pro-Aqua ISL, which is based on Protachem ISL, offers the positive properties of its sister product, but is not highly water-repellent like the latter. Instead, it is water-soluble and thus also suitable for surfactant-based products.
“The Signature Esters are just one example of the proven product diversity Protameen will provide to help our customers move forward with their innovative projects,” says Albrecht. “For PolyNeo, the new partnership marks another step towards a successful future, one that goes beyond the borders of Europe as well.”
