Having entered its third year, the Horizon2020 funded European Sustainable BIO-based nanoMAterials Community (BIOMAC), www.biomac-oitb.eu, has successfully launched and nearly completed its Open Call phase. Applicants still have the opportunity to submit a proposal and develop their biomaterial or bionanomaterial projects from TRL4 to TRL7 in this one-stop-shop collaborative environment.

What is BIOMAC about?

Due to their unique chemical and physical properties, nanomaterials find a wide range of applications. In order to exploit their potential in a sustainable environment, the BIOMAC project brings polymers and nanomaterials derived from renewable raw materials together to form innovative composite materials. 17 pilot plants and 11 service partners cover the entire value chain in an open innovation test bed structure (OITB), from production and marketing to sustainability analysis.

Added value

BIOMAC offers all aspects of bio-nanoproduct development under one conceptual umbrella. Users profit from the expertise of 11 SMEs, 3 large companies and 3 associations, as well as several renowned scientific institutions. Instead of having to communicate with partners individually, the BIOMAC OITB can be accessed through a single entry point (SEP) constituted by the IBB Netzwerk GmbH (IBB). The IBB assumes an interface function and mediates between customers/applicants wishing to have new products developed sustainably.

Test cases wanted!

A key aspect of the BIOMAC project is the evaluation of the OITB concept via so-called test cases (TECs). Companies and academic institutions wishing to take their product development from TRL 3 /4 to TRL 7 can apply to the current Open Call. Selected projects will be developed using the infrastructure, expertise and project management of the open innovation environment free of charge. The 2-step, online application process is straight-forward and unbureaucratic – for more information just visit https://www.biomac-oitb.eu/…. A handbook and guidelines are available and the IBB and BIOMAC coordination teams are happy to support applicants through the entire process.

Important dates of the Open call?

15th June 2023: Final submission date: Last day for submission of test case proposals.

The selected test cases will be implemented by the BIOMAC consortium from September 2023 until December 2024.
