A NASA space flight took place. Now the space probe OSIRIS-REX has landed with samples of the asteroid Bennu.

The evaluation of the samples taken will be exciting. Launched in September 2016, the spacecraft has been on the road for a long time, seven years and four billion miles. On the asteroid there are veins in the rock, which contain minerals that serve as carriers for metals and rare earths. Time and again, people think about the possibilities of a space economy. But transporting raw materials to Earth will fail because of the cost. The price of gold, for example, would have to rise to $268 million for one troy ounce, according to calculations. Commercial development is therefore not to be expected. After all, the space probe cost $1.1 billion and was thus no bargain.

The calculations for extracting metals from asteroids don’t get any better when you look at iridium. It is used for the production of chips and special alloys, and it costs about 4,700 US dollars per troy ounce, i.e. considerably more than gold. If you take the OSIRIS-REX as a benchmark, the price of iridium would have to rise at least 140,000 times. So would-be asteroid mining companies will have a more than difficult time, even if mineral selection and processing were possible in orbit. So, it makes more sense to focus on mining companies on Earth. For example, Karora Resources or Gold Terra Resource take care of gold.

Gold Terra Resourcehttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/gold-terra-resource-corp/ – owns the large and high-grade Yellowknife City Gold Project (918 square kilometers) in the Northwest Territories.

Karora Resourceshttps://www.commodity-tv.com/ondemand/companies/profil/karora-resources-inc/ – achieved record production of nearly 41,000 ounces of gold in Western Australia at its two gold mines in the second quarter of 2023.
