Sälzer, which is the high security division of Schüco, is now testing its high security products for the building envelope in a new Centre of Excellence. The newbuild of around 430 square metres accommodates a showroom and a training space along with a multifunctional test rig where windows and doors are tested against shock waves and vandalism, as well as for resistance to burglary and break-out attempts. Initial tests took place during the Marburg safety days, where reputable high security experts came together from a variety of sectors.

Whether a police or embassy building, an airport or a chemical company, the security requirements for such institutions are crucial. Highly secure windows, doors and façades are often employed in the protection of human lives and material assets. These are requirements that Sälzer specialises in. Having opened on 25 September 2024, the Centre of Excellence for high security combines an exhibition area, a training centre and a test centre all into a single building. “With the Centre of Excellence, we enable our customers to be impressed by the effectiveness of our high security systems themselves in a live test. As a result, we are strengthening our site in Marburg and our position in the market,” says Andreas Engelhardt, Managing Partner and CEO of Schüco International KG. While the test rig, training centre and showroom were previously located in different places, they are now combined in one location which offers considerable added value for the company and in particular, for its customers. This is because it is now possible to see how Sälzer systems meet the highest safety requirements and at the same time satisfy individual wishes in one place. Managing Director of Sälzer Doreen Krob also emphasises the significance of the Centre of Excellence: “We are proud that Sälzer can say ‚we’ve never failed‘, and with this statement we are able to further develop our high security solutions. The Centre of Excellence has succeeded in making even faster, indispensable high security solutions a reality.” The test rig in the Centre of Excellence gives an insight into how the high security solutions from Sälzer work. It is here that shock waves can be used to simulate a deflagration, for example how one might occur in the event of a malfunction in the petrochemical industry. Burglaries and break outs or vandalism scenarios can also be clearly demonstrated on the test rig. What’s special about Sälzer is that the high security systems combine multiple high security requirements in one system and are also tested accordingly on the test rig.

Summit for high security experts

The first public live tests took place at the Marburg Security Days on 26 and 27 September 2024. For the fifth time, the event organised by Sälzer in Marburg brought renowned specialists from different sectors together around the topic of high security. Among them was Professor Peter R. Neumann, Professor of Security Studies at King’s College London. “Security has a much more central significance now than even five or ten years ago,” he explains. “The increasing number of social and political conflicts in the world call for new prevention strategies in the handling of violent groups. In relation to protection against acts of sabotage or targeted attacks on critical infrastructure, building security is imperative.”

The Marburg Security Days this year focused on the motto ‚Sharing Knowledge. Connecting Experts.‘. The range of topics extended all the way from protection in public spaces to construction in the petrochemical sector, or the planning of a correctional facility to new developments in security technology with the German KRITIS Umbrella Act.
