Thonet’s S 220 range of chairs by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin (Industrial Facility), unveiled in 2022, is expanding. New to the elegant collection of moulded plywood chairs, available with and without armrests, is the comfortable S 220 H barstool. The aesthetics of the chairs in the collection have been carried through to the new barstool. This is a contemporary take on moulded plywood, transferring the familiar lines of the iconic 214 bentwood chair to a materialefficient, versatile stool with an ergonomic seat shell and lightweight tubular steel frame. The welcoming barstool is ideal for high dining setups as well as for meetings held around high tables and counters.

The seating from the S 220 range, which can be enjoyed in both residential and contract sectors, takes the established shape of the iconic 214 bentwood chair and brings it right up to date with the latest material technology. The style is characterised by elegantly curved bentwood lines that provide gentle, ergonomic support. Moulded plywood lends the resource-saving design a pleasant silkiness and has an organic grain with a beautifully contemporary look. The seat shell has just the right amount of give thanks to the chair’s slender design and its smoothly rounded front edge avoids creating any pressure points. This same seat shell is also used in the new S 220 H barstool, which has been designed for maximum comfort, even over extensive periods of sitting.

With the addition of the barstool, the S 220 range now offers maximum flexibility in the coordinated furnishing of different spaces – the new piece is perfectly in keeping with the current trend of using bar tables and counters in the hospitality industry, in future-oriented, agile working environments, and at home around breakfast or cocktail bars. The new addition to the S 220 family can be used to create cohesive furniture landscapes with different seat heights without having to compromise on a harmonious interior design.

Über die Thonet GmbH

Thonet – future-oriented furniture design with a long tradition

The unique success story of Thonet began with the work of master carpenter Michael Thonet. Ever since he established his first workshop in Boppard on the River Rhine in 1819, the name Thonet has stood for high-quality, innovative and elegant furniture. The breakthrough came with the iconic chair No. 14, today known the world over as the Vienna Coffee House Chair: the pioneering technique of bending solid beechwood enabled the mass production of chairs for the first time. The second milestone in design history was the tubular steel furniture by the famous Bauhaus architects Mart Stam, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Marcel Breuer in the 1930s. During those pioneering years, Thonet was the world’s largest producer of these tubular steel furniture designs, which are today considered timeless.

For the company today, the continuous process of innovation is the top priority, together with a focus on tradition and fine craftsmanship. Thonet’s furniture designs originate both from its collaborations with renowned national and international creatives and from the in-house Thonet Design Team. Chief Executive Officer Brian Boyd and Creative Director Norbert Ruf manage the company from the corporate head office and production site in Frankenberg/Eder (Germany). Michael Thonet’s fifth- and sixth-generation descendants are actively involved with the company’s business as partners and sales representatives.
