Pierre Dominique Prümm, Fraport AG’s Executive Director Aviation and Infrastructure, stated: “The new check-in counters provide passengers at FRA with a convenient, modern and efficient travel experience, right from their first stop inside the terminal. Using state-of-the-art technology optimizes the baggage drop-off process. My special thanks goes to the entire team who implemented this challenging project in record time. We’re always working with all of our partners to ensure that the pleasant journey for all passengers starts right here at Frankfurt Airport.”
Jens Ritter, Chief Executive Officer Lufthansa Airlines, said: "We both want to grow – in the medium and long term. And that is only possible with a smoothly functioning infrastructure. Passengers place the same demands on airport companies and airlines during their journey: the right information at exactly the right time. The choice between relying on digitization or preferring to be helped by staff. Short walking distances and short waiting times. After all, the journey begins on the ground. And as of now, we are better positioned here in Frankfurt with the new bag drop counters."
The partners worked together across two construction phases, each lasting around six months, to bring the new check-in counters to fruition. The old counters were dismantled, including a large section of the ceiling structure containing the technical equipment that links the counters with the baggage conveyor system.
The technical planning and development of the baggage drop-off machines was handled by Fraport, in close coordination with Lufthansa. The new design was created by the Marcus Pedersen design company from Denmark and German architectural firm netzwerkarchitekten, with technical implementation by the two companies of Bleichert and Profluss. Fraport’s investment costs for the project are around €20 million.
This particular construction project involved the Lufthansa check-in counters 200 to 400 in Terminal 1. Fraport will also be installing the new generation of bag-drop counters in additional areas of the terminal in the future.
With the project, Fraport and all of its partners are making a major contribution towards the ongoing enhancement of infrastructure for passengers at Frankfurt Airport.
