The measurement of conflicts, crises and wars is based on a methodology that was developed at the University of Heidelberg and then further developed to effectively analyze political risks. MBI CONIAS, tapping into a global network of resources, currently monitors over 1,200 political conflicts worldwide. Its findings are derived from a variety of sources, including but not limited to the ACLED event database, ensuring comprehensive coverage and analysis.
The number of ongoing wars is decreasing slightly, but the threats are becoming more diverse
It is not always the number of conflicts that gives cause for concern. Above all, it is the quality of the conflicts, the contentious issues and therefore also the political risks associated with these conflicts. As the head of the study, Dr. Nicolas Schwank, explains: "Many of the political crises affect European and North American security concerns much more than in the past. Russia’s war against Ukraine, the war in Israel or the simmering crisis between China and Taiwan – in these conflicts, either geographical proximity, political ties or the extent of economic ties play a major role. Unlike in previous years, Western countries have to actively respond to these crises and look for new suppliers for the supply chain as well as massively increasing defense spending”.
Ray Roberts-York, Managing Director of MBI, emphasizes the importance of political risks for companies: "We still find that many companies have a rather subjective perception of the extent to which they are threatened by the various political risks. With the security balance sheet and the data on the intensity and course of over 1,200 political conflicts, these risks can now even be made visible at the subnational level in more than 3,400 units and thus ultimately made controllable."
The detailed and comprehensive analysis of the MBI CONIAS Security Balance Sheet 2023 with all facts and figures is available for download on our website. For enriched risk analyses, enhanced strategic planning and staying proactive in the face of evolving political landscapes, the MBI CONIAS subnational data provide the means to navigate uncertainties effectively through intelligent forecasting.
