Link11, a global leader in cybersecurity, today announced the successful mitigation of Europe’s largest Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attack, which peaked at 1.4 terabits per second (Tbps). The attack, one of the most severe cyber threats ever recorded in Europe, was fully mitigated automatically by Link11’s advanced DDoS protection platform, ensuring zero impact on customer services. The attack was largely absorbed by Link11’s European scrubbing centers.

Explaining the Scale

To help visualize this, 1.4 terabits per second is equivalent to streaming over 300,000 high-definition (HD) movies at once. Such an enormous volume of malicious traffic is designed to overwhelm even the most robust digital infrastructure. However, thanks to Link11’s fully automated mitigation system, the attack was neutralized in real-time without any intervention, and the customer did not notice any disruption.

"Our customer was surprised when we informed them of the attack because they hadn’t noticed any issues on their systems," said Jens-Philipp Jung, CEO of Link11. "This seamless experience underscores the strength of our automated defense technology."

Setting a New Benchmark for Cyber Defense in Europe

This 1.4 Tbps attack is the largest publicly known DDoS event in Europe, surpassing the previous record of 991 Gbps from 2023 according to NETSCOUT.

The fully automated nature of the mitigation and the fact that the customer did not experience any disruption is a testament to Link11’s advanced DDoS protection technology.

Key Attack Statistics:

  • Peak Traffic: 1.4 terabits per second (Tbps)
  • Equivalent Data Load: Over 300,000 HD movie streams
  • Impact: Zero downtime or service degradation for customers

Growing Global DDoS Threats

"Even after 20 years, unsophisticated volumetric attacks remain a favoured tactic among cybercriminals, despite the growth of global network capacity,” said Karsten Desler, CTO of Link11. “However, the Link11 network, powered by AI and advanced mitigation capabilities, automatically neutralized the overwhelming DDoS traffic and kept the customer online throughout the incident."

The increasing frequency and size of DDoS attacks is a global concern. According to Link11’s European Cyber Report 1st half-year 2024, number of DDoS attacks has risen by 26% compared to the same period the year before, and high-bandwidth attacks are becoming more common.
