Doosan Lentjes has received the Full Notice to Proceed for the new sewage sludge treatment plant in the Belgian region of Flanders. The contract was signed two years ago, marking the start of the basic engineering including the approval planning. A Limited Notice to Proceed was issued one year ago after which the basic engineering was completed. Since then, Doosan Lentjes has successfully supported the customer, FOSTER, in the preparation of the documents required for the permit, thereby making a significant contribution to the realisation of the project.

As part of the turnkey contract, Doosan Lentjes will be responsible for the planning, delivery, installation and commissioning of the process, mechanical and electrical parts. Commissioning of the new plant in the port of Ghent is scheduled for 2026.

Project scope and technical details

The plant comprises one process line consisting of a bubbling bed furnace, a steam generator, a multi-stage flue gas cleaning system and a water-steam cycle. The DBFMO contract was awarded by Aquafin, the Flemish municipal wastewater treatment company, to the FOSTER consortium – consisting of the BESIX Group and Indaver NV.

Phosphorus recovery and emission control

Once completed, the new mono sewage sludge treatment plant will thermally treat 65,000 tonnes of dry substance per year. Mono-incineration enables the recovery of phosphorus from the ash, which is categorised as a critical raw material by the EU.

A modern flue gas cleaning system uses a combination of wastewater-free dry and wet processes to ensure compliance with all emission guidelines in accordance with the European BREF regulations. Heat exchangers are installed to efficiently utilise the heat contained in the flue gas, enabling the recovery of heat for feed water preheating.

Return to the market for sewage sludge treatment

"This order marks our successful re-entry into the business field of thermal sewage sludge treatment," says Heike Hünchen, Product Manager for thermal sewage sludge treatment at Doosan Lentjes. "We can draw on extensive experience in this area: For many years, we have planned and built plants for customers in Germany and Europe as a general contractor. With the new legal regulations that came into force in 2017, the market has taken on a new dynamic. We are now very much looking forward to realising the project in Flanders and working together with our customer FOSTER."

Doosan Lentjes has its headquarters in Ratingen, Germany, and is part of the Korean Doosan Group.
