Focus on battery metals such as cobalt, nickel and zinc

Cobalt is an important raw material. First things first: cobalt is not only a component of the electromobility sector and the electronics industry, but it is also an important metal for the defense sector. There it is used as a component of superalloys for the aerospace industry. Since February 22, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the largest supplier of cobalt, has stopped exporting cobalt for four months. The aim is to counteract the fall in the price of the raw material. While around 238,000 tons of cobalt were produced worldwide in 2023, this figure was significantly higher in 2024, at 290,000 tons, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The export ban has already driven up the price of cobalt. But whether this will be enough in the long term seems questionable. Perhaps the export ban will be extended or an export quota system will be introduced. In the Congo, cobalt production is often associated with poor working conditions. And even if there is currently a large supply of cobalt, cobalt from other regions such as the Congo is likely to be more popular.
